Digital audio refers to the representation of sound in a digital format, enabling precise manipulation, storage, and playback through electronic devices. Unlike analog audio, which captures continuous sound waves, digital audio converts sound into a sequence of discrete numerical values, typically using a process called analog-to-digital conversion (ADC). This allows sound to be stored as binary data (zeros and ones), making it compatible with computers, smartphones, digital audio workstations (DAWs), and a wide range of consumer and professional audio equipment.

At the core of digital audio is the sampling process, where the amplitude of an analog signal is measured at regular intervals called the sample rate, usually expressed in Hertz (Hz). Common sample rates include 44.1 kHz (standard CD quality), 48 kHz (professional video and film), and higher rates such as 96 kHz or 192 kHz for high-resolution audio. The precision of each sample is determined by bit depth, which defines the number of bits used to encode each measurement. A higher bit depth allows for greater dynamic range and finer detail, reducing the risk of distortion or noise.

Digital audio offers several advantages over analog formats. It is highly resistant to degradation, meaning recordings can be copied, transmitted, and stored without losing fidelity. It also allows for advanced processing and manipulation, including editing, mixing, mastering, and the application of complex effects that would be difficult or impossible in the analog domain. Digital audio can be compressed using formats such as MP3, AAC, or Ogg Vorbis to reduce file sizes for streaming or storage, while lossless formats like FLAC, ALAC, or WAV preserve the original quality.

The applications of digital audio are vast. In music production, it enables multi-track recording, virtual instruments, and seamless integration with DAWs. In film, television, and gaming, it allows precise synchronization of sound effects, dialogue, and music with visual media. Digital audio is also the backbone of streaming services, podcasts, online conferencing, and voice assistants, providing clarity and consistency across countless devices and platforms.
